It is important to teach how to learn any material, tool, skill, and pattern recognition. Currently in my fourth year of teaching I have focused on a few skills as personal beliefs of importance. Students are learning to :
For people who didn't know what I am teaching it is math. Math is a subject that is often looked at as important to understand but acceptable not to, as it is hard to learn and fully understand. Transliteracy is why I became a math teacher and I didn't know what that term was until this program. Math is not easy for me or is it intuitive. I have learned how to learn and that is how I have gotten so far. I feel that transliteracy and the willingness to try new things and develop new skills is what makes a good learner. My students feel safe, understood, and have appreciated the diversity of different tools and projects that can focus more on skills that can be transferred. The skills I have been teaching are not just for math. They transfer to other subjects, jobs, and life skills. Learning about sketchnoting this week helps remind me that I am in the right position for me. This is something I do with students all the time. I now have a way to define it. Watch the video below to get a good demonstration. Sketch Note Activities
